How To Stop Drowning In Trading Ideas
StatsEdgeTrading
If you have zero trading ideas, that is painful.
If you have a hundred, that can be just as bad.
Once you get a bit of experience, ideas show up everywhere. Walk the dog, boom, three new strategy tweaks. Shower, boom, a whole new futures system. Then you sit down at the desk, open your notebook, and freeze.
What do I work on first?
The fix is boringly simple: capture everything, then score it with a tiny framework called ICE.
Impact. Confidence. Effort.
For traders, impact means P and L. Ask, “If this works, how much can it realistically move the needle on my account?” A new core strategy that trades daily probably outranks a cute little once a month setup. A journaling automation that cleans up ten systems at once might outrank both.
Confidence is your honest read on how likely it is to deliver that impact. Have you traded a cousin of this idea before? Do you have backtests? Or is it a shower thought you have never seen in the wild?
Effort is how hard it will be to build, test, and deploy. We invert the scale: easy is a ten, brutal is a one. And yes, “fun” can nudge effort higher, because a fun six hour build is way easier to grind through than a miserable two hour chore.
Give each idea a one to ten score on Impact, Confidence, and Effort, multiply them, and drop the result in a fourth column. Sort by that ICE score. Congratulations, your idea firehose is now a prioritized backlog.
From there you can play it by timebox. Got a full deep work block? Hit the top of the list. Baby might wake up in 20 minutes? Sort by Effort and knock off a couple of quick wins to build momentum.
You will still need judgment. You still have to be honest when your pet idea is actually low impact. But the mental load drops fast when the question is no longer “What should I do?” and simply “What is next on the list?”
Quant beats vibes. But your brain still has limited bandwidth. Let a simple spreadsheet do the heavy lifting so you can focus on building edges and executing.
